First Aid - Heat Exhaustion

First Aid - Heat Exhaustion
By Kiya Sama

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) has reported that over 400 people suffer/die from heat exhaustion each year. Heat exhaustion occurs in individuals working in hot environments. It is brought about by the loss of water and salt through sweating. This loss of fluid will cause mild shock. This illness occurs most commonly to persons not accustomed to hot weather, those who are overweight, and those who perspire excessively. Note that not only humans suffer from these conditions. Animals (pets) are also prone to suffering from heat exhaustion.

The signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion are as follows:

  1. The skin is pale and clammy.
  2. The skin shows evidence of profuse perspiration.
  3. Breathing is rapid and shallow.
  4. The pulse is rapid and weak.
  5. The victim may complain of nausea, weakness, dizziness, and/or headache.
  6. The first aid for heat exhaustion is as follows:

  7. Move the victim to a cool and comfortable place, but do not allow chilling.
  8. Try to cool the victim by fanning and/or wiping the face with a cool, wet cloth, or immersing the person in a tub of cool water, or placing the person in a cool shower, or spraying the person with water from a garden hose - anything that seems feasible at the time.
  9. Loosen the victim s clothing.
  10. If fainting seems likely, have the victim lie down with feet elevated 8 to 12 inches.
  11. Treat the victim for shock.
  12. Do not give the victim alcohol.
